The body is not your identity at all. Unless you accept the Reality that “the body is not your identity”, the experience of a body-form will continue to appear upon your Presence. These concepts create so much confusion, and then, the mind raises all sorts of questions. So many questions keep arising, and they are all body-based questions! I receive so many questions from seekers, and they are always body-based concepts. Melt, dissolve, demolish all your body-based concepts. This is the primary task at hand. Your problems are all body-related, arising from this human life that is only a dream: depression, worry, sadness, loneliness, feeling unloved, fearfulness, stress, dispeace, unhappiness, misery, etc, etc. We have become fearful of everything. We behave like sheep, instead of lions! We have a lot of tension. There is no peacefulness, or blissfulness. And, we are always fearful of death. All these illusory concepts are to be demolished. Demolish all your concepts! This is the main goal of spirituality.

Q. When people practice the I Am meditation, they don’t seem to know how to cross over, or go beyond it?
M. Forget about spirituality. .to say I is ego. Why are you trying to remain in/as I? It means you are taking some ego and saying I am somebody else. I am… this means you are somebody else and you are to stay like this (eyes closed) “I” – this is duality. I! You have not to make any efforts. In the beginning, you are to accept that your I am is in existence. You are knowing I am through body only. It is open fact, the body is not your identity. So while remaining in the I am, you are considering yourself as somebody else and, with the subtle ego, you want to stay as “I Am”. This is not the Ultimate Truth which will not give you happiness. So your presence is spontaneous – don’t think, don’t apply the intellect, so, to stay in the I am, how to stay there is all illusion. You are already in that. It is already within you. But you are trying deliberately to remain in the I am. I am somebody else and I am to remain in the I am. Illusory concept! Be as it is! Reality, don’t think, don’t pressure the brain. The spontaneous feeling is just that… I am… there is no concept. As Nisargadatta Maharaj says: What is this body? Just glimpses of “I”. Just the glimpses of I which has no shape. no colour, no witness, no experiencer, just… (M holds his hands up and relaxed saying”I”. We’re tryng to experience I to be Brahman, Atman, and to do that you are having to be somebody else.
Q. So there is duality, there is a split?
M. Immediately! When you try to stay like that. Why to try? I want to stay Charles. I am Charles. You are already Charles, so why to be I am Charles. Charles has been given the name to this body. .It is not your Ultimate Reality. Similarly, your spontaneous presence, existence, is without shape. It is called Brahman, Atman, God… Name is given – I also is illusion. To say I, you are to take ego; to say Master, you are to take ego. You are neither Master or disciple. But for beginning, for understanding, we have to remain in that I. Q. Be as you are? M. Because you are. As I told you – you are Charles, why to remain in “I am Charles”… so, who says I am to remain there? Who says I am to remain?
Q. I think the understanding was that if you stay in the I am, meditate on the I am, then you will go beyond the I am. But everybody seems to be staying in the I am and not managing to go beyond.
M. You see your spontaneous existence manifested, so without you, there is not any focus. When I say I am, I stays there – subtle ego. Don’t make any effort. What to know through the various spiritual words, what they were trying to convey – don’t take literal meaning. Meditation is concentrating on the concentrator. It is spontaneous. It is spontaneous action.
Just like you are remaining as Charles, not as I am Charles, I am Charles. So, for 24hrs you are remaining as Charles, without making any effort. Similarly, to stay in I, to remain in I, you are already I, and name is given to the I – the invisible, anonymous identity. Name is given “I” to the invisible, anonymous, unidentified identity.
Q. So when people sit down and meditate on the I am…
M. At the beginning, meditation means you are concentrating… I told you what is meditation. Someone talks and abuses you, so for 24hours you are remembering that. That is meditation. So the same thing when you are told ‘I am Brahman’, you forget all body expressions / experiences, so like when a person abuses you, you won’t let go. I want to know Brahman, so you are taking the revenge, you’re all … every cell in the body, is having one goal, which is I am to take revenge on that, (mistaken body identity). And if someone tries to convince you or to forget, no, no, no.. the entire body is wanting to do the meditation. Entire body is consumed by anger, this is meditation. So when you are told that you are Brahman, you are Ultimate Truth, you are accepting life in this way. Then totally and spontaneously you forget about the body. Though you are living in the body, body is the external cover. That is why I told, to say I, to say you is illusion. I means through which you feel, through which you spontaneously feel. But it is presence without any shape, without any form. And then you say ‘I’ – the Ultimate Truth through which you know yourself in the real sense. Sometimes called I. I does not have any figure, no shape, formless.
You can’t realize presence through bodily I. Prior to beingness did you have any I? The total body dissolves and the presence also dies. Where has that I gone? The beingness disappears. And if the beingness disappears, where is that I? There’s no I, there’s no you, nothing is there. So why to say stay in the I? Why to remain in the I? You are dumping yourself in an illusory muddle. You’ve kept yourself in this balloon. You have this balloon and in this balloon you are dumping yourself, and trying to concentrate and remain there in the I. So you need to pop the balloon. So how to break the balloon?
Chickens, you know, eggs. Inside the chicken has a beak and it pecks and breaks out of the hard shell. So beak is given in the form of knowledge. You are in the circle the beak is given to break out of that circle (of illusion). That chicken inside, that baby is spontaneously breaking it – a thick cover. Q. So the beak represents knowledge which is used to break through the shell. M. Ultimate Truth is like that. What you call Brahman, Atman, Paramatman.. its action is spontaneous. When the egg matures the breakthrough happens. You see it is a very hard core. But that small chicken breaks it. So around us is hard core illusion. So with the knowledge, Ultimate knowledge, spiritual truth, peck and come out. You are your own Master.
So whatever you read or listen, to some extent, it is helpful but after reaching the final destination you do not need an address. So don’t take literally the meaning of what the Masters say. What they want to convey is most important. To remain in I is stuck… you have created a balloon, a concept, how to stay – it is not.
Q. Similar to Ramana Maharshi – and people who sit asking ‘Who am I?’ and last night you said ‘The answer is the questioner.’ – which made people laugh. And yet many people are sitting for years asking who am I? Similar to Nisargadatta’s… It’s self-enquiry.
M. Yes, self—enquiry. First stage self-enquiry, second stage self knowledge, third stage self- realization. So after getting so much knowledge, reading so many books, listening to Masters, you must ask where do I stand? Whether I am fearless? If the answer is no… tension-free life? If the answer is no? So out of this reading it knows… I am a blank cheque. I am blank. So having such knowledge should make you fearless. Because it’s simple knowledge, yu are not the body, you were not the body, you are not going to remain the body. Through body, you visualize and come across so many concepts. Prior to beingness you are not knowing who am I? It’s open secret. After the so-called death of the body total knowledge is dissolved with the disappearance of the body. After leaving the body, who says ‘I am’? I am also disappears along with the body. The moment the beingness came when the spirit clicked with the body. So from the beginning yo say I, I, I… So prior to beingness there is no I, after the body dissolves
– no I. So why to concentrate on the ‘I’?
Siddharameshwar and the Dasbodh said prior to beingness there is no I, after the disappearance of the body there is no I, in between how did that I come? So think of this in the light of all the knowledge.
Q. So in a way one could say that I am needs to be removed?
M. In body form you are saying I am.
Q. But if the meditation on I am does not lead to Ultimate Reality then it’s not very helpful to meditate on I am?
M. Why to remain in the I am when we are already there. But you are colouring with form. Meditation on I am when you are already… Prior to beingness where is the I, as I told you, I is just like the sky. This is reality. We are giving this America, India, words, names like Brahman Atman, Parabrahman… I is there. Why to concentrate on I? You’re already there, just to realize the body is not my identity. Because you are not accepting that the body is not your identity, you like to remain in I. Because you are not coming out from the body identity. Body identity was not there, body identity is not going to remain there constantly. At present, though you remain in the body it is not your Ultimate Truth. So you’re concentrating on something else, I am going to remain in I. … Master says you are to undergo the meditation. Why you want to remain in I? This is not meditation. You are unaware of your identity. You are unknown to you.
That unknown spirit is covered with the illusory thoughts. Mind, ego, intellect, so many thoughts. To come out of this illusory field,….mantra is given. What is the meaning of mantra? I am Brahman, Brahman I am. So like I am That, I am That. So after concentrating this, you forget your identity, you forget I also. At a particular moment, you are totally
invisible to everything. No experience, no nothing. At a particular moment, I disappears, I also disappears. To say I some subtle ego is there.
So through meditation you… become blind to everything like a trance. But trance also has witness – so beyond trance. Trance also is witness, so …I had a good sleep, so who said, and who sleeps? The seer is there, I had a very good sleep, peaceful sleep. Who had the peaceful sleep? The seer is there in invisible form. We are using I. So likewise we are to convince you. It’s open secret – name I is given to that Ultimate Truth. Name I is given to that invisible Ultimate Truth. And therefore, to know yourself in the real sense, all this meditation, concentration, self-inquiry, bhajan, knowledge – these are the various steps.
After having conviction, nothing to do. Your reaction is spontaneous action. Why are you trying to remain in the I am? You’re already there. You’re already in the ashram, so why you try to remain there? You don’t say I will reamin in ashram, I remain in Ashram… So meditation is just to forget the body identity. Just to forget mind, ego, intellect. These are the
… your landmarks. So beginners are given meditation, after this it is spontaneous. So I am meditating I, is what? Meditating is different, I is different…
Q. Back into the duality – subject-object.
M. Yes! You see when there is no object, the question of subject never arises. So you say I am object, I am to become something else. You are already there, why to become. How to become Charles, you are already Charles. Likewise, you are already I. I am the name given to that Ultimate Truth, invisible, truth, anonymous truth. It is the indication, because names are used. How long are you going to remain I for? I does not have any identity. You are posing yourself I as someone else..….
I tell you a story… one foreigner came to India and he asked who made the Taj Mahal? And the guide said ‘I don’t know’. He visited so many places and asked that question… I don’t know the name of the person… sees a dead body being carried and asks who is that? Again guide says I don’t know. So he says this meaning he does not know the name of anything, any person. All is entire dream and therefore I don’t know….. I don’t know who died…Likewise the entire world is I don’t know. Just for understanding… So prior to beingness there was no
I. After dissolving beingness, there is no I. Whatever feels that I through body only. So here you are giving shape to that I. Making it a balloon. I does not have any identity.…
Q. Having read some Nisargadatta Maharaj, I got the impression that the I am was the doorway and like a tunnel, you had to go through the I am, like the chicken with the egg.
M. I am is the process. You know algebra – and you get the proper answer X or Y… and from that X you come to the right answer. So I is just an X after that process of I you are coming to the truth. The real answer. It is a process, through the I you are coming to the Final Truth…
Q. As long as you don’t stay with the I all the time? It is becoming no movement to stay in the
I. Because I told you that during a meditation, I had this concept of Nisargadatta Maharaj, ‘Stay at the door, the door is open… and the door became a block and then I realized that there was no door.
M. There’s no door at all. Because walls are there, bodies are there.
Q. I removed the door and I was through…what I mean is that the door was no longer there.
M. So you broke yourself with the concepts. Master has given key how to open the door. Ok

You are steady. Everything is moving around you. When you are traveling on train. You are steady train is running, trees are also running. You are there and there only. So likewise, your existence is beyond sky. So, what I want to convey to you is that without body your existence is beyond sky. So don’t worry what will happen, ‘I dreamt this body, what will happen to that soul’ or whatever. Nothing is going to happen. When you come in this world as a man or woman, have you thought prior to birth ‘I will take birth in Russia’? Therefore totally don’t have any pressure of body. Enjoy this life peacefully, happily. Do your job efficiently. So now you have got Ultimate Truth in you.
That is sufficient, what do you want more?
These are invaluable jewels given to you. Why to beg for somebody’s grace? One Saint from Ashram, he came here after discussion he says ‘Put your hand on my head’ Why? You can put your own hand on your head. Because he was not, he is about 75, so his devotion more than 50 – 60 years in this field. He had not come across such knowledge. So he wanted to come again, he is suffering from his diabetic condition, has heart condition. Even though after 60 years journey he came here. He was a Swami. So this is direct, this knowledge is very, very rare.

Q: We don’t know about the specific Ganesha gesture.
‘The spiritual path is very easy’ it’s very easy. I am trying to tell you, spiritual path is very, very easy it is your own story. ‘Attention which is on this side needs to be shifted to the other side’. We are having attention on body, all the time concentrating body, therefore that attention should be paid to the Ultimate Truth. ‘Ganesha idol is God for pleasant thoughts and offer sweets’. Your presenting flowers etc. You are doing everything for the idol. ‘However you do not pay any attention to what he says by his hand gesture. He shows, directly he shows, a pinch between thumb and finger to say “Only this is the mistake which has to be corrected’.
Q: What does that explain?
I’ll tell you. He is directing you pinch thumb and finger. Like this. Only this is the little mistake we are making.
Instead of having attention that ‘I am Brahman’ You are talking as a man or woman, in body form. That means you are Ultimate Truth, but you are committing a little mistake that ‘I am somebody else’.

“Who says “I am”? How that “I am” is? You can’t guess. There is No Logic. There no any inferences. You can’t define also. I Am Beyond Definition, because It is not having specific identity. See what is in the body? Just Glimpses of ‘I’ only. I Am, Just I So there’s no need of any – have of gods and goddesses. God and goddesses are imaginary. Saint Tukaram said “All gods and goddesses are imaginary gods and goddesses.” They’ve taken birth along with this body. This Body Is Not Your Identity At All. So identification of gods and goddesses came along with the body only. As a matter of fact, existence of god, or creation of god, came across along with the body and you are not body at all.
So what is the Purpose of Spirituality? You are holding so many bodies, male body, female body. Who is listening from this body? Who is talking through the body? Who is making activity from the body? That Invisible Unidentified Energy called Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, God, Master That You Are!
But since childhood until today, and so because of long association with the body, we are having strong faith, belief, in this food-body. Food-body having some time-limit. Not to the Holder of the food-body. So now, we can understand intellectually. I Am Not Body, It Is Fact, it is Open Fact. Body is having some time-limit, 60, 70, 80 years, what-have-me. After, willingly or unwillingly you are to leave the body. So, we are to Identify Our Self In Real-Sense. We are identifying our self in body-form, that is illusion. So, we are to discriminate what is illusion, what is The Reality. What You See It is Illusion, Through Which You See It Is Reality. Through Which You See It is Called Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, God, Master That You Are. But all the time we are measuring our self in body-form and that is illusion. So, Try to Identify. Because so many concepts engraved upon you since childhood until today. You are man or a woman, you are dying, death is there, birth is there, past life, future life. No Life Is There!
Why to count beads? Some people think you count beads, what is the use of counting beads? Take so many “ram, hanuman, jai hanuman, jai ram jai ram” why what is the use? Nothing is there, it is meaningless. Prior to beingness do you think that “jai ram jai ram jai ram”? No jai ram jai ram jai ram. So, though the Spirit tempted to count the beads “Ram Ram, Ram”, I Am Inviting Attention of That Spirit That Yourself Is Ram! Ram is not separate. They mention that, it is said that in the – religious science says, Brahma is giving birth. Then Vishnu is protecting or supplying food or something, taking care of the bodies. And third thing is Shiva. He is vanishing the bodies like that. The god of death, the Shiva-God. The caretaker, Vishnu. And birth-giving by Brahma. Here is the question, ok, who has given birth to Brahma? Who is Brahma’s Father? ‘Brahma is your father’, who is the father of Brahma. Vishnu taking care of you, who is taking care of the Vishnu? Then, god of death is Shiva. So, what happened to Shiva? Who is taking his soul from, when his time is end, after his death? So, these are the concepts developed, religious science, it is imaginary. And we’re again, we’re developing the same concept, under the pressure of the same concept. So, you are to discard all these concepts, no reasoning is there. “Ram, Ram, Vishnu, Vishnu “all these concept, a waste of time. You are to come to some conclusion.
Yes, you want to ask something?
Q: Maharaj, even for discussion, exactly for discussion can we say like, Ultimate Truth used body for to know Itself?
Maharaj: Ultimate truth is Not….
Q: Only for discussion
Maharaj: Ultimate Truth is Not Separate from You.
Q: For discussion, to separate it.
Maharaj: It is Ultimate Truth because around Ultimate Truth so many concepts are there. So, one should not become the victim of all these illusionary concepts. What I am referring, all this background, because there are so many things are there. And people asking “yes is this last birth is there, future birth is there? If I take “Ram, Ram” Naam is it ok? (inaudible) Naam is there, so many – Hanuman Chalisi is there, so many concepts. These are the concept. Not bad. In the beginning it’s necessary. But it is not useful at the time of leaving your body. If you say “Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram” at the time of leaving the body, it will not help you. This is just a name given to some body-based-concept. To say ‘Ram, Ram’ also to say some ‘Shivaya, Shivaya’, energy is required. I Am Inviting Attention Of That, That Energy Through Which You Are Talking, through which you are watching the world, through which you are watching your dreams and all. That energy called Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, God, Master That You are. After Spontaneous Conviction, your all actions or reactions will be illusionary. Because after Conviction appears Spontaneously there is no birth, no death. Why should I afraid of the death? No death is there. What is the body? Nothing is there, just Glimpses of ‘I’ is there.
Therefore, to have Spontaneous Conviction, you are to undergo strictly meditation. Meditation just hammering, as I have told, hammering. Because you have forgot your Identity. Though you have got direct knowledge, I am Brahman, it is not confirmed, it is not convinced, it is not, there is no conviction. To have Spontaneous Conviction you are to undergo strictly meditation. Through meditation you are hammering yourself ‘I am Brahman – Brahman I am – I am Brahman – I Am Brahman. It is Called Soham Sadhana. So that is the base of this spiritual knowledge. With the result all concept, of religious concept, or any concept will be discarded. In the Bhagavad Gita it is said that – I give some reference for your knowledge – what he says, “discard all religion (speaking Marathi) discard all religion, and through Which the real form came into existence that Invisible I, You Bow Down to That.” Through which you are identifying all religions, forget about it, it is meant just for a happiness or for peacefulness of the society. So, discard all this, it is illusionary religion. So, Presence appear in you, Invisible Presence appear in you since you are Ultimate Truth. So, the purpose behind that, Except Your Selfless Self there is No God, No Brahman, No Atman, No Paramatman. Ram, Krishna – so many names are given to that Ultimate Truth, but it is not that, it is for the identification. It is not ram, Krishna, or something, something. Therefore Tukaram, Saint Tukaram said “All these are imaginary god, and will dissolve with the imaginations. You Are Separate from That. So be stick up with the Real, with Reality. It is the Reality, called Ultimate Truth That You Are. That’s the Principal of Spirituality.”

When did you come across with the disturbing mind? When did you come across with the mind? When you know yourself, ‘I am’. Then you came across with the mind. What is the mind? ego? who says ‘my intellect’? Who says ‘I’? To say something, your prior Presence, your Spontaneous Presence is necessary.
How that Presence is? Spontaneous Presence, Invisible Presence, Anonymous Presence. Unidentified identity. Just to indicate, it’s say,identity, or it’s existence. You are having tremendous energy, all the time we are measuring in this body. So therefore, I have given the example of that factory. These are veils, mind, ego, and intellect. That is in charge, ego and intellect are working under him. Workers are there all parts are there, working hours and years together. You are providing them with energy. You are paying their salary. Your taking food. Your nourishing them. I am trying to simplify this.
Q: It is mysterious. Beyond the common sense or solution.
M: See very powerful exceptional energy, power you have. But because you are not aware of your power, therefore you are trying to have some artificial happiness, artificial peace, their painkillers.
Q: I have temptation to use this energy. Ego tempatation to…
M: Again you are taking the body form. Be as it is. After knowing be as it is, be silent. Temptation is coming through the body feeling. Who’s temptations? Why this? No temptation is there. You want to become something. Who wants to become something? Again you are taking the body form. But that conviction is required, Yes! Temptations are bound to be there, feelings are bound to be there. But always behind that temptation, behind that alertness, behind everything, your Presence is there.
Q: If I have conviction I also take the body form.
M: Conviction, there is no separate conviction. I told you this body is called man, that’s conviction. Are you saying ‘I’m a man, I’m a man?, I‘m Vladimer, I’m Vladimer’ are you repeating ‘I am Vladimer, I am Vladimer’? No. Your parents have given the name Vladimer. Your Vladimer. Even in deep sleep, say Vladimer, oh, I am Vladimer. So that name is totally attached with your body. And you accept as fact.
Q: About this conviction, so…
M: This body is called man, that is conviction. If anyone says you are a woman, you will slap him.
Your name is Vladimer. In deep sleep, someone says Vladimer, you wake and say yes. In deep sleep also you remember your name.
Q: So conviction is kind of silent knowledge.
M: Conviction means, Ultimate Truth, which is accepted spontaneously. When that lion is not knowing he is a lion. Since he was brought up with the goats. He considered himself, that lion considered himself, ‘I’m a goat, I’m a got.’ And he started fearing dogs and fox and things. Lion from jungle or forest says ‘You are not a goat, Your a lion.’ He took him and analyzed the all the parts of his body. See my parts of the body, see your parts of the body they are the same. Then he went to compare the body of the goats. Then the goat says “Oh, I am a lion.” Likewise Master is explaining all these things. Your not a man or woman, You are not Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, Master. Your identity is beyond that. Your identity is beyond that. These are high definitions. Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, OK, good, good. But what they want to convey? Your power your energy, is extremely, beyond, beyond, that. Not even that. You are prior to everything. Without presence you can not find see the world. So Your Presence can not be defined in words. We are trying to use so many words, to convince that. What more do you want?
Q: I don’t know.
M: So just be silent.
Q: I want this to be established.
M: Again your asking, why, your already there. You are already there. But you forget, therefore
you say ‘I want to be established’ You are established, the established Truth, it’s Ultimate Truth. Just like you say ‘I want to become Vladimer’ How can you become Vladimer? ‘I want to become man’ You are already man! Likewise the terminology that Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, Master, God, Goddesses, all these are within you only. Only one thing because of association with the body you forgot your identity. That is shown through the source of Master. Their is no difference between, Master and seekers and disciple. Spirit is there.
What is there? Take your time, use your energy, nothing wrong with you. Happiness is there, your beyond fear, fear is a shadow. It is your shadow, ghost, where is the ghost? Your shadow. To say ‘ghost’ or to say ‘God’ your Presence is there. Without your Presence how can you say ‘ghost’ and ‘God’? These are imaginary things.
Q: What is the meaning of beyond time and space?
M:Time and space we created, no time no space is there. No meaning is there, everything is meaningless. Yourself, myself the entire world is meaningless. Entire world is illusion. Who has created time? After having touched with the body you say ‘This is time, this is space, this is east, this is west’, no meaning is there. Though no words are there, there is no meaning. Your Absolute everywhere you are. Beyond sky, your Presence is beyond sky, no meaning is there. Meaning is also giving some limitations.
For discussion it is OK. No time limit, no border limit, no meaning is there. You see within your Selfless Self, nothing is there. Just some way, some subtle way say ‘I’. Without having any shape. The wave does not have any shape. The experience I have is because of body base, if body is not there who will talk about the I? If body is not there, who will talk about the ‘I’, ‘You’, ‘He”, ‘She’, ‘It’, nothing is there. Nisargadatta Maharaj says ‘If you want to compare, compare just like the sky’, sky does not have it’s own feeling. Birth, death, meaning, time limit, nothing is there. We created a circle, we created so many concepts, ok, using say, human life, all conditions and meanings are there. All science is there, spiritual science is there, religions are there, it is an illusory world. That is what is ‘Shivoham’ no master, no brother, no disciple, nothing is there. It is easy to say but you need to have spontaneous conviction. It is open fact. After leaving body where is the meaning? As long as we are living in the body as a man or woman, ‘somebody else’ all these concepts are there. When did concepts come across, when you came across with the body, if there is no body, no concepts are there. I’m inviting attention of that Ultimate Truth. Listeners truth.
Q: Prior to beingness, it doesn’t seem, there is nothing Maharaj.
M: Yes, of course, nothing, to know nothing, all this everything is there. I told you everything came out of nothing, everything dissolves within nothing. Just for discussion purpose we are refreshing the Reality. Because you forgot your identity, it is not your fault. Because of long association with the body, you forgot your identity under the pressure of man, woman, some concepts are there, all concepts came along with the body and will dissolve along with the body. Entire world is illusion, nothing is there. Brahman is illusion, Atman is illusion, Paramatman, Master and Disciple is illusion. Siddharameshwar Maharaj says ‘To teach you something I have to take ego as a master’ without ego I can’t talk with you. There is no difference between you and me, but you are posing as a man ‘somebody else’, you have to change your views. There should be conviction, ‘I am nothing to do with the world’.
Q: What do you mean by idendity? Unidentified, but you said it is identity?
M: Presence is there. Without your knowledge, some Presence is there. Therefore, unidentified, invisble annonymous identity. Listen to my words, how I define. It is unidentified, invisble identity – you can’t see, annonymous – there is no name, you can’t define it. Pure Presence, Presence is nameless, without form, it cannot be defined with any words. Therefore we say unidentified idenity, annonymous identity, invisble identity. You can’t guess.
Q: Maharaj, does it indicate itself?
M: Selfless Self. You say ‘self’ it is having some color of ego, when you say ‘self’ there is some color of ego. It is Selfless Self.
Q: Yes, so ‘self’ without ego?
M: Sellfess Self, there is no ego, no mind there is no intellect. There is no ‘I’ there is no ‘You’ nothing is there.
Q: When you teach a person, do you give him a task on purpose or just spontaneously. For example, ‘Today I will tempt him, I will give him temptation and we will see whether he can manage it or not.’ Do you give like this or just spontaneously?
Temptation appears spontaneously, I am not giving, I have to take ego to give something. There is no ego, no giving, no taking. It happens spontaneously. The Listener is spontaneous, Listener is listening, Speaker is speaking, body is external cover, this is a voice box. See, there is not any difference because everywhere, all these bodies, Spirit is one. Bodies are different all the time were thinking as body, body-knowledge. Therefore ‘I am different’ that body identity is supposed to be dissolved. We are talking something, we are listening something, on the base of body. It’s open fact, body is not your identity at all.
For discussion purpose, say action of thoughts, conversation, language is there, body is required, only body can’t listen, it requires some Spirit, Power. This is a power house. Power is invisible, if power is not there, what is the use of the power house? The inner power is supplying power, generating power, but if generating power stopped then what is the use of that power house? It is open truth it is not difficult. Some or other way, we are having strong faith in body because of long association with the body. We have allot of attachment. If I stay at some house I get used to that house. This is a house. Staying 30, years, 40 years, 50 years, after maintaining it, you’ll not want to leave the house. This house belongs to the five elements. Just like stones are there, bricks are there, cement is there, sand is there. Blood is there, flesh is there, bones are there, so many organs are there, without power nothing will not function.
Q: Maharaj, I am is the whole world.
M: We say ‘I-am’ is the whole, ‘I-am’ is the world, beyond the world, this is all literal knowledge.
Q: It’s my feeling.
M: My feeling, who is feeling that, behind that my feeling, something is there to say ‘my-feeling’. To
say ‘my-feeling’ some energy is there. Without that how can you say ‘my-feeling’? Some click is
there, spontaneous click, spontaneous presence is there, out of that spontaneous presence immediately
taking ego as, ‘my-feeling’. There is no ego, there is no intellect, there is no mind, when you say
‘my-feeling’, prior to that feeling your spontaneous presence is there.
You follow?
Q: Yes, I follow but not with my mind.
M: Forget about mind. So like electricity, that light, electricity is there. Therefore it is flowing,
who is the cause of the shining?, electricity. This is a light, this is a fan. ‘My light’, who says
‘my light’? Without electricity how can you say light You can say ‘my-light’, but if electricity is
not there how can you say ‘my-light’? Likewise, ‘my feeling’ ‘I-am’, to say ‘I-am’ to say ‘my
feeling’, some subtle, some invisible, spontaneous, anonymous, presence is there. Without that
presence, you can’t say ‘I’ or ‘you’. I am inviting attention of that invisible presence. Which
cannot be defined in the words.
Presence is there, but it can not be defined. Out of that presence we are talking. We are acting,
body is only media. Mind is media, intellect is media, ego is media, all these, this factory working
because of one electricity. If that electricity, power is not there, what is the use of the factory?
This is factory. Heart is working, liver is working, eyes are there, so this is inner factory. Your
eating, your digesting, these internal parts. Entire body is one factory, who is running that
factory?
I am running life with ‘my-mind’, director, so many things are there. Mind is there, intellect is
there, personality department is there. General Managers are there, so this isa factory. How is it
working? Some owner is there? Invisible owner, Spontaneous owner.
With that invisible instruction, that factory is working. What happens is that mind becomes stronger,
mind starts to give instruction to that owner mind starts to give instruction to that owner. Owner is
not knowing his identity. Master says, No, don’t take instruction, You are the one, You are the
owner who is running all this, You are paying him.

That Spirit or Presence acting through body is called Brahman, Atman, Paramatman, God, Master. It is not limited to the body, it is beyond the body. And knowledge means That Identification. So, theoretically we know that I am Brahman, Paramatman, God, Master. To implement the practice, you have to undergo the meditation. What is the result of meditation? You will not get results immediately. It has happened in my case also. I have taken Mantra, October 31st of 1962. In the beginning, not possible to understand what Maharaj used to say. Every day, in the evening, I used to go to Maharaj, there was lecture, before there are some foreigners used to be at the house, there are discussions, so I’m attending discussion also, attending lectures also. But uh beyond my capacity, no idea. But Maharaj used to say, “Listen to me, Listen to me”. What he wants to say that “Listen to Me”, that Invisible Listener is Listening to his speech and engraving it indirectly. Though intellectually you are not able to understand, but some Invisible Presence engraving that Reality Permanently. At that particular moment, you will not get results, you say “I can’t understand, it’s beyond my capacity.” But it is absorbing within you indirectly, Master’s Word. He used to say, “Listen to me, Listen to me”. Sometimes he used to give some tips. So, he said “What is there in body? Nothing, Only Glimpses Of I”. So, he told long ago this, then after some years back, afterwards, everything opened. How that open? Because after strong meditation, Involvement, Faith in Masters, your Inner Master Open the Secret of the Spirituality. Because Inner Master is not separate from the External Master, these are only concepts. But whatever is in you, that Power, it opens Behind. And I slowly, slowly I form That. Listen, You’re Presence is Everywhere. Every being has Presence, it happens Spontaneously inside, inside, it is surprise. Second thing, sometimes I think very, very bad thoughts. I feel sometimes guilty, some hatred, jealousy, bad dreams, it happens, but I am getting confused. But thereafter after some time, it’s open, “why should I guilty?” Its nature of the mind to know the thoughts. I’m not accepting any thought that flow in the mind. I’m not guilty for that. That is Reality Opened. Some Inner Voice explaining the Reality before you. At that time, you will not have any separate from That. You become One with That.
That Spontaneous Instructions, some answer of your special question, or some difficult question, is flowing inside. And there was some dialog within me. See it is very funny miracles, directly within you. When you are asking some question, when some question is raised inside, immediately those questions are answered. There Is No Master physically, but your Inner Master – this is also concept – your Inner Power replying that questions and you accept that “Oh how it is!” So whenever, if anybody asking any difficult question the instant answer is there because your Inner Master is pleased with you, you have not become separate from Inner Master. Therefore, Nisargadatta Maharaj say, “I’m not making you disciple I’m making you Master.” Because Masterly Essence already within you. It happens, you are unaware of that power. Always you are measuring yourself, counting yourself in body form. That body-concept supposed to be dissolved for which meditation is having powerful effect. It happens, and then slowly, silently, permanently, you feel that “Oh, body is not my identity at all, why should I fear?”. Because prior to beingness I am not body, after leaving body nothing remains.
So, knowledge, purpose of knowledge, value of knowledge, till that, till that knowledge that Reality absorb within you. What is knowledge? Spiritual knowledge, spiritual knowledge, what spiritual knowledge? Spiritual Knowledge, through Master, place before you the Reality of the Listener. And You Are Listener, To Whom There Is No Shape. That Conviction supposed to be appear. Then everything will be clear within you. You need not to go to anywhere in the world, no need of any Masters. But you are to enter your Master, your Spiritual Master external master. If external Master say “You Are Brahman” you are to accept it. Therefore, those illiterate people they have accepted it, plainly, no doubts. We’re having some intellect, we are creating some “why this? how this? how this?” No why, no how. My Master is Master. My Master says, ‘You are Brahman’, You are Brahman. No other thoughts. Like that you are to accept the Reality. What happens?
We develop intellect, spiritual intellect. We’re having subtle ego. We’re having pressure of mind. And therefore, always, though we are Knowing the Reality, we are confused. We confuse ourself. Our thoughts creating problems. When alert these thoughts are illusory thoughts, not to struggle with thought, it is natural, that mind is manufacturing something that I told you. So, whatever thoughts are useful for your routine you can accept it, else throw it. What happens is the nature of the body is that whatever person accepts “yes, my thought my thoughts”, and then some depression is there. So, in that case, how to act or how to react under the various circumstances, that Reality will come out of you. There’ll be inner voice, no doubt will be there. If mind says no no-oh I don’t want it. So, you are to have commanding nature. Your mind has become slave, now we have become slave of mind.
Mind instructing your power. So, in that case we are powering power to the mind, ego, intellect. What is mind, ego, intellect? They are subtle organs. Subtle functioning bodies. Where are those prior to beingness? Nothing. We came across with the body only, needs, requirement, desires, good desire, bad desire, all concept, all concepts, came along with body. And now only you are afraid of all these concepts, but we are trying, we have accepted the concept, my thoughts.
Therefore, we feel guilty or feeling tension, anything happens against our mind you are getting tension, depressed, “oh that man is not”, there is jealousy. Nisargadatta Maharaj used to say not to be jealous of anybody.
There should not be attract, not to hurt anybody’s feelings, that is basic. That means directly or indirectly you are assaulting family members, your friends, anybody else, you feel that he is not doing well, or say something bad or some…. ok. Don’t insist, don’t force somebody to act according to your wishes. Suppose your wife is there, brother is there, sister is there, son is there, mother is there, so many. They are expecting that they should behave like this, this, this and that, it become again to accept that, some concept, a spiritual exhibition. You feel something irritating. I told that “You not follow me.” So, like that force, create problems for you. Forget it. forget it, why to insist? You are Master of Your Own. The world itself is illusory world, it’s a dream. Because prior to 100 years you were not there. After 100, how you will be there? So, nothing dissolves into nothing. Nothing came out of nothing. And we are fighting because ‘this is something’. That fighting is supposed to be stopped. That confusion is supposed to be stopped. You can stop it. Not difficult.
Why Master is required? Because we are not knowing Reality, even though we are knowing the Reality it is not implemented. We’re having body pressure, we’re having mind pressure, we’re having ego pressure, intellect pressure. Some thoughts are there. So many thoughts racing all the time. So, that to say, not to come across with such element which will distract you from the Reality. You know better, your aware mind. When you know the identity perfectly, why to go to enquiry, ‘how that I Brahman is” hmm? Brahman does not have any shape. It’s the nature of, ‘oh after this going Master, how that Brahman is.” And he’s trying to impress concepts. This master says like this, this master says like this. You follow your inner Master, and through meditation you are giving some strength, power to inner Master to open the Truth to you. Then your external identity will be dissolved. No identity remains. You become one with your Selfless Self. Though you are living as a man or woman, you are not taking any touch, you remain unconcerned with the world, as if you are acting in a drama. So, That Reality is supposed to be absorbed, digested, for which meditation….
Q: So not to struggle? I mean you want to put in effort but not to struggle with it….
Maharaj: What, why to struggle? Why to struggle with, we are struggling with our own thoughts. It is the nature of the body to manufacture so many thoughts. 24-hour thoughts. In dream, also the thoughts are there. After meditation, after Conviction, after absorbing the Knowledge, Reality, you are not giving so much importance to thoughts. Why become victim of your thoughts? Ok the thoughts are flowing. Some dog is barking. Are you paying attention to why that dog is barking? No. Similarly, mind is flowing with thoughts, then you can forget it. Listen to me. Then you become thoughtless. If you give importance to the thought, then again and again it’s trying to confuse you. So be alert. Be cautious. All the time. Because Bhajan is there, prayers are there. It is a systematic Devotion. All the time you are alert. Alertness is there. Through Bhajan and through prayers, through meditation, knowledge. You are getting alertness. You are not becoming a victim of anybody’s thoughts, anybody’s concepts, or your own concepts. Very simple thing. You are not forgetting, from that dedication. Knowledge is there, but dedication is there. It’s the only thing, beyond that nothing is there. You don’t have to think how to maintain it, that you have to do. You may be anywhere, you can do your job, do your duties. You can recite the Mantra, reciting Mantra.
Sit for meditation, if you got sufficient time to, one hour, half an hour, sit for half an hour for meditation. time. Remember all this Atmosphere so your mind will not play tricks against you.
The mind always tries to distract you from it. Even some other people, some different concepts are there. Everybody says, “I know Brahman, I know Brahman, I know Brahman.’ The story of that blind boy going to see the elephant. Whatever part he got he says, “this is the elephant”. But when you see the entire elephant, you don’t argue with that. That is correct. You are Knowing. Like that, there are so many Masters, so many things are there. Everybody says, “Brahman is like that, Brahman is like this, Brahman…….” Ok. Not to struggle with it. When you know the Reality, why to struggle?
So be Strong, Spiritually Strong. Now you know the Reality, you are to maintain that Reality. Do your duties, do your jobs, your responsibilities. Earn something if you are earning something, what is there? Nisargadatta Maharaj was working, not to depend on anybody else, stand on your own feet. Spirituality is not restricting any of your activities. Whatever is required for this body, you can have it. “Oh, I am spiritual man, how can I do this?” Nothing. If you are having any time you may come to master. If not, I can talk with you on telephone, mobile is there. Nowadays lots of facilities are there. But stand on your own feet. Spiritually lets you stand on your own feet. Master is there, but even if Master is not with you physically Master is Master. Master is not there so I find other live masters, disciple of, so many persons “oh I have to go find live master”. What do you mean live Master? You are live Master.

Maharaj: So as we are discussing the same thing. Same tape we are repeating again and
again.(Laughter)
Devotee A: Just push play…
Devotee B: Raga…
Maharaj: Same Raga. (Laughter) Words are different. The principle behind that you get
some Spontaneous Happiness. Then, so many (inaudible) are there. They’re reading books,
listening, but some or other way they’re coming on the body-based-knowledge. Yesterday
some lady made a lot of arguments, in a message, and “Why is my family like this? Why my
son-in-law is acting like this?” So many (inaudible) But we are not concerned with family
matters. Spirituality not concerned with the family matters, why your son is not studying?
How can I help that? Why your husband (inaudible). I can’t help you! The main thing
(inaudible) family life, I can’t help you. Because base of the Spirituality, You are not body
at all. You live Happily. You are getting some Courage to live Happily, Peacefully, because
since You are holding your body you have started to believe in the body and you are acting
according to that, therefore we are having some depression, and some sadness,
unpleasantness, painful life. How to be painful life (inaudible) pleasure (inaudible).
Devotee C: But still it can be that Spirit feels it just by chance helps you in life. So that, I
don’t expect so much from my family members anymore, then they are free.
Maharaj: Yes, it happens. Because not you, but some other people say that, particularly
ladies, a problem, “My husband is not going like me. I am spiritual, doing bhajan,
meditation, why my husband is like this? My son is like this? Why he’s not learning?
Why…” What you? How to do? What to do? (Laughter) I can’t take care of your family life.
So it happens. So after teaching, after listening, after reading, again that body-based
concept pricking. It should not (inaudible), because our concept of the reality is not real
point. (Inaudible) devotees are reading, but that Conviction is not there. Some or other
body-based-concept is there. That’s supposed to be dissolved, melted – without it, it is not
possible. Even if told that, even intellectuals say that “this is not your Identity at all”.
Where are all these bodies prior to beingness? Nothing was there. My husband, my father,
my sister, my guru. All these concepts came along with the body. After leaving the body
what concept remain? Nothing remain. It’s open, even forget of spirituality, you think
intellectually also, “this is not going to remain.” And further, if there is no Presence, what is
the value of this body? It’s a dead body. So after knowing this, you will be have Conviction
that (inaudible) that I am not birth and death, no birth, there’s no death. Inside this body,
what is there? Just glimpses of I. It’s space, just like a veil, subtle veil, through which we
feel ‘I’. If there is no veil, how can you feel ‘I’? And that ‘I’ we are directly experiencing. And
it’s nature of the Spirit to continue this life for long. It’s not possible. But the importance of
spirituality, it give you Courage. Whatever happened, happened on the body. It may be
words, but it give courage to, how to live happily. (Inaudible) Nisargadatta Maharaj,
number of problems, number of problems. Since he was a – there was so many – he was
there, even he become disciple of Siddharameshwar Maharaj. He left all his things. He
wanted to experience these words, etc, etc. Now his family life and his business are totally
disturbed. Then his mother died, daughter died. Father, what why he die? So many
calamities! His business gone. Now out of ten shop, one shop remains. So many things are
there. He also (inaudible). In spite of that he not left spirituality. Because you are getting
Courage how to live in all these circumstances. So this spiritual teaching show how to live
successfully, peacefully in spite of there are so many difficulties and depressions. It’s the
purpose behind it. But you are trying to relate, ‘my family life’ to spirituality. So this
Understanding, this Conviction (inaudible) reading book. So try to overcome all these
difficulties. Because you have got Power how to overcome all these difficulties. You can use
your Power. And as it, it is fact that this is illusory world. There is no I, you, he, she, it,
nothing is there. There is no master, there is no disciple, there is no god, there is no
devotee. It’s Fact, but so far we are holding body so all concept are there. The moment
body disappears what concept? Nothing remains. Who is God? What is God? What is
Brahman? What is Atman, Paramatman, Master (inaudible)? So everything came out of
nothing, everything dissolve within nothing, It’s fact. (inaudible) the ego. So not struggle,
not struggle with the mind. No fighting with the mind. We are fighting with the mind,
fighting with the thoughts, yes why not? We behave like this. We are preparing some
frames and within that framework (inaudible).
Devotee A: My only depression is not repeating the Mantra enough. Otherwise I feel very
good, but I feel like I’m not repeating the Mantra enough. But I guess as depression goes,
it’s a good depression to have.
Maharaj: So now to accept that thing within you. Mantra is saying that ‘You Are Brahman,
Atman, Paramatman, God, Master’. Master does not have any death and birth. No
depression, nothing is there. No peacefulness is required, no happiness is required because
happiness, peacefulness, they connected to the body only. Because body-knowledge is not
tolerable. So Spirituality teaching you to stand on your own feet. Not to depend upon
anybody, including masters also. Encourage you own Master, approach your Own Master.
It’s Powerful Master. But we have our habit, “give something, be something, give me
blessing. (Inaudible).
Devotee D: Who needs to be courageous? When you say that we need courage. I don’t feel
that I am very courageous person…
Maharaj: Courage is required because you are considering yourself in body-form.
Devotee D: Yes, but where I get that courage I……
Maharaj: It’s Spontaneous Courage. Even difficulty appear before you, you not disturbed,
you’re not depressed. Some incidents, some unpleasant incidents happen in your life, at
that time you are getting some Courage, Firmness, to remain unconcerned with that
incident. Previously if such thing happens we are getting afraid, disturbed, depressed. That
depression will not come after having this Conviction. You are getting courage
spontaneously, it happen. Let it happen, even it happen I am not concerned with it. Like
that black clouds will go away. Clouds are coming, going. You are There and There Only. So
you will feel spontaneous within you, continuous meditation. Because slowly, silently, and
permanently all body-based-concepts supposed to be dissolved. Then only You remain
untouched with the world. Whatever happening in the world, forget it. Because You are not
body at all, I was not body at all. So stop measuring in body-form because You are
Formless.

Q: I’m confused about when the best time to activate the inner Master and do the self-enquiry. Should that…
Maharaj: See, I said that ‘inner Master’ and ‘outer Master’ are concepts. There’s no difference between the internal Master and the external Master. Just for understanding we are saying ‘internal Master’, ‘external Master’, there’s no difference between any ‘internal Master’ and ‘external Master’. It’s just for understanding. Master is Master, there’s no inner and no outer, no external.
Q: Thank you.
Maharaj: Yes?
Q: Who is eligible to have the Naam Mantra?
Maharaj: Everybody!
Q: (inaudible)..requirement for that?
Maharaj: Yes, yes, I told John. If you are willing to have the Naam Mantra, spare some time for Naam Mantra. But it should be sincere. I’m not accepting anything from you, but you should be sincere to accept it, your involvement is most important. Because what happens, is that things we get free of charge have no value. I’m not expecting anything from you except your involvement, which is most important, not anything else. To give the Naam Mantra is not difficult for me. But there should not be some ill-faith or something. Be serious about the Naam Mantra.
Q: How to practice it?
Maharaj: (Inaudible), (I’ll guide you). You are to recite the Mantra according to the breathing. At the initial stage we are giving some discipline, just like when you are learning some language, how to write a-b-c-d and all these things.
Q7: Because sometimes it feels we are torturing ourself.
Maharaj: It’s not necessary to torture yourself. It’s a very simple thing. No torturing, no special exercise. Why to torture the body? It’s a simple thing, it’s your knowledge, not the knowledge of ‘Brahman’, ‘Atman’, ‘Paramatman’. The Invisible Listener within you is Ultimate Truth, it is called Ultimate Truth. But you are neglecting it, you are underestimating yourself. You say “God is great”, “Oh God bless me”, okay, it’s not bad. But if your Presence is not there, how can you identify God?
To say ‘God’ your Presence is required. If there’s no Presence in the body, who will talk about the God? Who will talk about this world? At the initial stage I’m insisting on meditation because we forgot our identity. You might have read so many books, you might have listened to so many Masters. But you’re not reading, not listening as if it’s the listener’s story, the readers story, “It’s my story”. If somebody writes your biography, you“It’s my biography”.
Yes?
Q: You can also recite with an ‘Om Nama Sivaya’ or (other) mantra also?
Maharaj: You can recite one mantra, any one mantra. Not to take one mantra from one Master, go to another Master for some other mantra. Have some loyalty or faith with your mantra, any mantra will do. Not to encourage wavering mind: “Today one Master gives this mantra then that Master gives a different Mantra”.
Q: No, in the morning you have a habit of (inaudible), ten minutes…
Maharaj: Okay, no problem. With full faith, full involvement. Any mantra will do: ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ is okay, ‘Sivoham’, any mantra. But be faithful with full trust.
Q: I’m kind of confused. When you say something comes…nothing comes from something, and then something becomes nothing?
Maharaj: I said that ‘everything came out of nothing, and everything dissolves back into nothing’. Everything came out of nothing and everything dissolves within nothing.
Q: But how can something become nothing? And nothing become something, I mean…
Maharaj: We are playing with the words. Try to identify yourself so this question will not arise in your mind. These are the words, I repeat, this is language through which you are conveying yourself. We have created language: ‘something’, ‘nothing’, ‘everything’, these are words. The basic principle behind that is that you have to try to identify yourself, try to identify the Invisible Listener within you. Instead of analyzing so many words, spiritual words, try to identify: who is the analyzer? Who wants this knowledge? What is the purpose of this knowledge? To what extent is this knowledge helpful? Suppose somebody has lots of knowledge. Will that knowledge help at the time of leaving the body? Lots of knowledge, so many books you are reading, fifty years of sadhana, seventy years of sadhana, or something. Just question yourself: “After reading so many books, after having approached so many Masters, after having a lot of knowledge, will this knowledge help me at the time of leaving the body?” You should be fearless. That fearless life should be there. That moment should be a happy moment: “I am not dying, no death is there. I am unborn.”
You’ll get spontaneous courage out of spirituality to approach any problem. Thoughts are coming and going, negative thoughts are coming and going, depressions are there. But after having Conviction you’ll neglect all these depressive thoughts. It is momentary, just like clouds, black clouds coming and going. You are there and there only.
